For the children under the age of 15 years, asthma is the 3rd leading cause for them to get hospitalized. In the year 2009, 29% of all the asthma patients were under 15 years of age. The direct health care cost of Asthma annually is around $50.1 billion that further leads to $5.9 billion of indirect cost and this resulting in total of $56 billion.
Around 13 million of children across the globe miss their school every year due to asthma. It is also seen that the disease is more common in male children as compared to females. Exertion caused due to exercise and second hand smoke are among the major triggers of the asthma with 90% and 60% share respectively. Other triggers include exposure to dust mites, changes in the climatic conditions suddenly, pollen and pet dander.
If we consider the worst cities in US in terms of Asthma than St.Louis, Missouri will top the list followed by Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Birmingham, Alabama. Some of the other cities include Memphis, Atlanta, Little Rock, McAllen, Charlotte, Knoxville and Chattanooga.
