What better way to see which new sports car out of all of the ones today is the fastest than to put them all on the same racetrack, with the same driver, and record the results?
That’s exactly what Motor Trend did over the course of the last few years, and since they compile detailed data and statistics on everything they test, it was pretty straightforward for them to come out and create an infographic like this. Motor Trend test practically every new sports car that comes out in their reviews, and one of their yearly projects is the “Best Drivers Car” contest, where part of the objective is to see how well each car handles and how fast it can lap a track. The track in question is Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, and this is where the data for this infographic was gathered. Besides outright lap time, the other two main criteria judged are braking and acceleration (represented in the triangle area charts). This data was not collected at the Laguna Seca track, but somewhere else. Now there were 10 cars that were picked as the top-10, and only one car can have a perfect 10 score for each criteria.
One thing that is interesting in this infographic is to try to see which car has the largest area covered in the little triangle charts, meaning which car is the most well-rounded. A car with only a small orange area being shown means that the car isn’t really good at anything (compared to it’s competitors), but subjectively these are all great cars—and very fast—our they wouldn’t have been picked for this comparison in the first place.
